First time ever spending Australia Day in Australia! What a blast! Sorry Canada but here on the Gold Coast they had more national fever then I’ve seen back home in Toronto!
Jill and I woke up hot and sweaty from the gorgeous temps they have here! We started our day off the way we usually do checking emails, and seeing how to get the Roo out there. I was curious as to the cultural difference between “celebrating days” to see how involved or not Aussies were.
So we decided to invite 9 of our Canadian friends (and 2 Italian ones too) to celebrate Australia day the best way we knew how: coolers full of goodies, the beach, and fun eats!
I sorta snuck away from the pack to find out what Australia Day was all about from the Aussies themselves! I found that most people dressed in the Aussie Blue colour, a lot had the Southern Cross tattoo’d or fake tattoo’d on them. Lots of fun Australia Day hats, bikini’s, dancers, chanting and of course drinking and beach sports! Watch our next Talk To A Roo, to see how I made out!
As for the Aussie’s themselves here’s some things they’d like you to know:
- They don’t ride Kangaroo’s to school
- They DON’T put “shrimp” on the Barbie… they don’t even call them shrimp it’s Prawns
- Dingo’s don’t eat their babies, but they aren’t that friendly either
- Fosters isn’t “Australian For Beer”… most places don’t even sell it. XXXX GOLD, VB, MB, or Crownies, Hahn, or Toohey’s is Australian for beer.
- If you’re Canadian and they ask if you’re American they’re so sorry immediately if they’ve insulted us. (So funny)
- Just because the men here have sick bodies, dress well and smell nice, doesn’t mean they don’t like women.
- The men aren’t all bad, they’ll just look at you with the same lust and determination as a sick wave they’d like to ride.
- If you ask for cheddar cheese here, yes it’s white, no it doesn’t taste the same, and no Mac & Cheese doesn’t come in the orange kind.
So after an hour of mucking about the beach trying to find out what Australia Day is all about I made my way back home to the Canadians and much like any national pride day I discovered that it’s just about being with the people you love, in the places that you love the most!
Have a wicked Roo time on your national day where ever that is!

Lol! I do this too! Somebody told me Americans and Canadians hate each other and its really rude if you mix the two up.
lol we don’t hate Americans….at least not the way that the rest of the world seems to….maybe it’s just our close proximity to the states so we are so used to them! lol
and maybe i just hold that opinion because we are from Toronto and it is quite Americanized there in some parts….maybe the more rural parts of Canada or different provinces would hold different opinions but as for me, I know a lot of really sweet Americans……………but at the same time, I still like to drive home the fact that I am Canadian and not American lol

You gals might be able to get Foster’s in Surfers but if u go to other suburbs and try to order people will actually laugh……
