When traveling Australia Byron Bay used to be commonly known as a predominant whaling station in Australia. It’s popularity comes from wicked beaches and is one of the best beaches in all of Oz! It is a very popular tourist mecca amongst backpackers and flashpackers alike.
This small town hosts thousands of visitors during the summer months (Dec-Feb). Bungalow road is the main road where you will find shops, cafes, restaurants, and accommodation, it even takes you right to Main Beach! There are plenty of places to stay in Byron Bay like the camping grounds, hostels, hotels, motels, and B&B’s. There are also trains and buses that run everyday from both north and south when your traveling Australia.
When traveling Australia in Byron Bay don’t forget to go up to Cape Byron! Cape Byron reaches out to the most easterly point of Australia’s mainland. Captain Cook named Cape Byron after the poet Byron’s grandfather who during the 1760’s sailed around the world. This is also a fabulous spot for snorkeling and you can see the footage in our Byron Bay episode for yourselves!
There are even 3 different species of sea turtles to be found here, you can see Hawkbills, and the Green and Giant Loggerhead. There is also a plethora of blue gropers, wobbegongs, manta rays, and many different fish. During migrating season you can spot whales passing by so keep your eyes peeled in June/July and September/November (you can also see whales in our Byron Bay episode).
The beaches in Byron Bay Australia stretch about 50km. West of Main Beach is Belongil Beach and the NUDIST Tyagarah Beach. Oi! I wouldn’t even want to worry about burning in “those” places!
The selection of beaches in between these two places are great for surfing, especially off The Pass towards the south end of Clarks Beach (no we didn’t just make that up because Jill’s last name is Clark).
Jill and I LOVED Byron Bay, we had a fantastic time at Budda Bar and up at Cape Byron. Jill thinks that Cape Byron is Heaven’s front door. It very well could have been. It’s so peaceful and tranquil up there that you almost wonder about life, love and everything in between. The beauty of the ocean and landscape is so majestic that it’s hard not to get lost in thought and appreciation for life and all that is good.
While doing an interview with Andy, our “eccalecky” Byron Banterer, I was bitten by something when I was sitting on the grass. I was trying not to show the shear pain, but it hurt like a mother fudger! After the interview I started getting a welt on the back of my leg and there were two bite marks. After doing the interviews with John in Coff’s Harbour I was terrified for my life. I rushed up to the nearest security guard and I was fighting back the tears of pain as I asked him if I was going to die.
He smiled and looked at my leg, then laughed at me and told me I was bit by a black ant! Now, so someone who’s never been bit by one of these sons of beaches, the pain actually feels like being stung by a wasp. Not fun…not fun. He reassured me that I wasn’t going to die, and that the pain would go away in about 20 minutes and that I’d probably feel really itchy. Zut ALORS!
Anywho, we made our way back to the Dolphin Motel (one of our fav places to stay in Byron Bay) and laughed about the whole ordeal. I guess when you’re traveling Australia you really have to just take everything in stride!
That’s the behind the scenes for Byron Bay, hoped you like the episode and we’ll see ROO later!
Cheers!
