Yamba has a population of about 7000 people and upon entering it you definitely get that small town surfy vibe. This population however doubles during the Janurary school holidays because of its 11 stunning beaches and being proclaimed as having one of the “best climates in the world”.
Another fun fact about Yamba is that normally when all the other beaches are cold Yamba has warm waters in July due to a warm current making its way down the coast at that time.
After a long day of driving we finally made it to our first shoot on TIME!
Jill and I had been getting all sorts of lost with Google maps! Best bet, just ask a local or the gas station attendant.
We arrived at the YHA Backpackers Resort just in time for Shane’s $10 tour, the tour is mostly scenic based, but you get to jump off cliffs, feed pelicans, and piranas?
Shane is hilarious! You definitely have to meet this guy if you’re ever in Yamba. His family owns the YHA Backpackers Resort in Yamba and it’s one of the nicest places we stayed (hostel wise) on our road trip. You really get a sense of family there, they have tons of activities and Shane personally gives tours, surf lessons, and encourages outtings in Yamba.
Jill and I experienced a wide range of emotions on this tour from excitement, to awe, to downright scared. Check out next weeks Roo episode to see if I really do jump off the 33ft cliff or just cry like a big baby in a wet tank top!
Aside from all the excitement of the tour Jill and I were getting pretty exhausted at this time. We’d been going on virtually no sleep, not showering, eating out of gas stations (for the most part) trying to navigate in a foreign country and overall trying not get our selves killed. As much as we wanted to party with all the other backpackers on a Friday night, Jill and I decided to chill out in our van and watch season 4 of How I Met Your Mother at around 7p. The next thing I remember it was 6am and we were waking up in a parking lot. Gawd we’re cool.
We quickly got showered and ate a very yummy breaky at the resort and we were on our way!
Hot tip: if you notice our hair down that meant we were lucky enough to find a decent shower! Our logic: we’d rather be gross in our own filth then bath in someone elses!
Ahhhh life of a flash packer!
Hope you tune in next week to see if I jumped!
See roo later!
